The life cycle of an adult butterfly, such as this Spicebush Swallowtail, begins as an egg.  The caterpillar hatches from the egg and later forms a chrysalis where it is transformed into the butterfly.  This change in form from caterpillar to butterfly is called metamorphosis, and is still not entirely understood by scientists.
